Are you a daydreamer? Do your friends sometimes wonder where you’ve gone when you’re sitting right in front of them? I can be off on an adventure of the mind at the drop of a hat, but never more so than the moment in a day when I smell something interesting.
I’m the one in the coffee aisle sniffing a bag of beans and thinking about standing halfway up Kilimanjaro watching the sun rise over the African plains. Or paused outside a house with a woodburner, dreaming of the smell of wood smoke in the hillside villages of the Himalayan foothills. Picking up a pine cone will have me walking along a pine-clad beach in Mallorca, and slicing into a lemon will take me back to my grandmother’s kitchen and homemade lemon curd.
I’m sure one of the reasons I became an aromatherapist was due to the amazing power of essential oils to transport us someplace else. Even a single oil can be hugely effective. The delicate smell of Neroli, for example, has me wandering through orange groves in Andalusia when the trees are in full blossom, breathing deeply and smiling at the warm sun on my face. And one waft of the warm, rich scent of Frankincense and I’m in a huge Basilica somewhere in Italy, standing in the coolness, the light dancing through intricate stained glass windows.
Most of the time however, it is a blend of oils that can really take us elsewhere, and often to a place that is unrecognisable. We can’t put our finger on it. It’s somewhere we think we might remember but we’re not really sure we’ve been. A time from the past, maybe, or could it be the future? At the moment of inhalation we are transported to another dimension. One of dreams and possibilities, hopes and longing. It’s a place we ache for but can’t describe. A special place our soul knows and recognises.
If I can find that place with my oils then something amazing starts to happen for me. My breathing slows. My mind clears. The tension in my body starts to lessen as worries fall away. I become connected to something outside of myself. I start to feel at ease. I start to feel lighter. The positive outweighs the negative. I find that in going someplace in my mind, I’m actually coming back home to myself in my body and soul.
